Wiltshire based whistle maker with 20+ years experience
Wiltshire based whistle maker
My name is Peter Wynn and I have been making woodwind instruments, specialising in English Flageolet and Irish Whistles, for the past 20 years.
I have owned a wood lathe since I was 13 years old, and about the same time I started playing the whistle. It was always an ambition of mine to put the two together and to make woodwind instruments, but acquiring the tools and skills took many years.
I attended the well-known instrument making course at London Metropolitan University (ex London College of Furniture Making) and there I churned out my first functional instrument. Over decades of woodworking I have never ceased to be amazed by the beauty of timber and it’s always a joy to open a new billet and to discover the potential in the wood.
In addition to the instruments that I make to order, I usually have a selection in stock. Click below to see whats available.
I do two styles: English Flageolet and Irish Whistle. Both are 6-hole whistles, playing a full two octaves and perhaps a few more on top
Sustainable Production
Whilst I work with woods from all over the world, I always look to source as locally as possible
Irish Whistles
Irish whistle has the characteristics you’d expect - brash and loud but also capable of being sweet and expressive
English Flageolet
English flageolet has the outline somewhat like a very early recorder and perhaps its sound is a little inclined that way - a bit fuller and mellower than the Irish
